We asked Neil if he could share his story with us: 

Yaama. 
My name is Neil Thorne I am an Aboriginal Artist from the Yuwaalaraay people of the Gamilaraay Nation.

Originally from Walgett in north west NSW, I now live in Gloucester. I am a retired teacher who was always interested in art. 
The artists of Umbakumba on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, where I started my teaching career were a great inspiration to me.
I was an Aboriginal Resource Teacher for most of my teaching career and made and produced lots of different types of Aboriginal resources for my school. I was also doing artworks on commission for lots of different organisations and people. I have produced artworks for the NSW Dept of Education, ACT Dept of Education, NSW Teachers Federation, HBJ Publishers, UNICEF Australia, RPA Hospitals Children’s ward, Aurora Project, Scholastic Publishers and lots of individuals.
I have done various types of artworks including book covers, murals, book illustrations, screen prints, wood burnings, a Christmas card design and lino prints.
I have had 2 exhibitions at the local art gallery and had artwork exhibited at Taronga Zoo’s National Aboriginal and Islander Week celebrations.
